15 WAYS ON HOW TO SURVIVE IN YOUR NEW SCHOOL
Compiled by Marie Tonie Yulo
1. First, take a day to appreciate your environment. You won't fit in at school if you
don't know the school.
2. Be reasonably nice to everyone. - Teachers, Classmates and Schoolmates alike
because they might just be your next friends and teachers. Actually, they will
most probably be your next friends and teachers.
3. Get to know your teachers. Talk to them and find out more about them. See how
strict or lenient they are. Know what ticks them off. This will give you a head start
in their classes. The best advice of course will come from previous students.
4. You need to make friends. But choose your friends wisely. It might be tempting
to be best buddies with the cool person who sleeps late, knows how to party
and doesn't attend class. But that person won't help you pass your classes and
graduate. That's not to say you can't have fun--just balance your study and class
time with your carefree time.
5. Pay attention in class. Professors are going to treat you like an adult in college.
You're responsible for handing in papers, taking notes and showing up for class.
If you don't do these things, you only have yourself to blame. We are all prisoners
of our own habits.
6. If today is your first day in school, then some people will notice you, especially if
it is a small school. When people talk to you, don't be nervous, but don't be too
loud. Be confident and make eye contact. However, sometimes you may need to
make yourself loud in case you do not get noticed, and constantly try to attract
attention to yourself. Don't worry too much about what they think of you, - you'll
over think the situation and they might judge you for being that. Be genuine, and
yourself, & be nice to everyone, - no matter how mean they appear to be at first.
It's usually always the 'girl/guy that I hated at my new school' that starts to be
friends with you after a little sincerity. But then again, don't be afraid to stand up
for yourself, - if it's very clear that you should.
7. Don't worry about getting to know the school too much. Know where TechLab
or the Library is and whenever possible, ask the person sitting near you where
something is. It's a good way to talk to people and meet a lot of people on your
first day, - you're the new kid now, - tell people that you are whenever you need
some help.
8. When you talk to those of the opposite sex, don't flirt too much before finding
out if they're already with someone. Once one person hates you, their entire
group will hate you too, - remember these people grew up together, so it's their
obligation to defend their lifelong friends, so be nice, and optimistic, - even if
there happens to be an annoyance. They might even let you be the annoyance
to another new kid someday, it usually takes a year and a half, but they'll come
around. Always remember to have a good first impression but it's also important
to be yourself.
9. For your first lunch, talk a lot to people in the class right before lunch. Usually,
they will ask you if you're sitting with anyone, but if not, steer the topic towards
school lunch.
10.For the first week at your new school, be nice to everyone and talk to everyone,
even if they seem weird. They could always know people you'd rather be friends
with or introduce you to more people. However, if they are hated by everyone,
then it is advised not to become best friends with them unless you really want
to, don't get too into people, hang out with everyone, and make sure you know a
group or person well enough to deem them your friend, - it's usually always the
most tricky, manipulative people that talk to you at first, and it's usually those who
just talk to you later on, at the back of the classroom who are there for you later
on.
11.Pay attention in class and try hard in school. If someone passes a note or
whispers something to you, ignore them so you can pay attention to the teacher.
12.Join a few clubs or sports and make more friends this way. Make sure you are
committed to that sport or club.
13.After you've talked to someone a few times, ask for their contact information.
Even better, ask them to do something over the weekend.
14. Please the other kids. While you don't want to be a complete kiss-up, kids like the
people who will cooperate with them. If they ask you a favor, do it. Don't be too
gullible, - people will sometimes even push your buttons to test what your 'limits'
are, - like testing the waters. Just make sure you confidently (maybe even with a
big smile on your face)... reply 'reasonably'. If they accuse you of something you
didn't do, reply saying you've never done that, and then ask them who'd say that.
15.Be consistently level-headed inside and out, and don't over-think people or
situations, and work hard on the determination to fit in while still being you. Be
prepared to be overwhelmed. It's natural to feel confused, frustrated, homesick
and unprepared. Know that you're not alone in these feelings. Talk to your
parents, peers or counselors about problems that concern you.

How To Enhance your Intelligence
Compiled by Marie Tonie Yulo
Brain is very similar to a muscle. Like muscles, brain also needs the right kind of exercise and nutrition. The more you use your brain in the right direction, the more you will enhance your ability to focus and think sharply. On the contrary, if you feed your brain the wrong chemicals you will harm its functioning and your thinking capabilities.
Listed below are 5 easy techniques to extract a little more of creativity from your gray cells.
1. Avoid Watching Television: This is perhaps very tough to convince people about. Many people love to just sit in front of TV. Watching TV is not at all productive. It neither enhances your mental capability nor recharges your brain. It is very similar to having all energy drained out of your brain without reaping the benefits of exercise.
TV does make you feel tired after a few hours. Don’t you agree? Eyes hurt and crave for rest after you watch TV for a long time. You are not left with any energy and motivation to read a book. A good way to relax is to read a book. If not a book, then listening to music is a great idea to relax. Whenever in the company of friends and family have a chat with them instead of watching television. This will utilize you mind more than when you watch television.
2. Work Out: Earlier, I used to think that reading a book is more useful than exercising. But over time I realized exercise is more helpful since it helps you learn more in the long run. A work out is a good way to cleanse your body and rejuvenate it. You will find that exercise helps you focus for longer periods of time.
3. Read books that stimulate thought: Fiction is what most prefer to read, but it is hardly useful for enhancing the thought process. Reading books which are mentally challenging will help you improve your ability to read and write. Classics will improve your vocabulary to think in English and may even change the pattern of your thinking. Never ignore the words you don’t understand. Look up for their meanings. Also put all your effort in understanding paragraphs which appear complicated. Read them again and again to understand the full depth. Cultivate this habit and you will soon be able to grasp any complicated matter.
Once you get hooked to stimulating books, you will no longer be tempted to read fiction. Learning and imbibing fresh ides is far more thrilling than reading a fiction novel.
4. Sleep Early, Rise Early: Insufficient sleep is the main cause of people not being able to focus for extended periods of time. Sleeping early and rising up early will keep you very fresh and active. Remaining awake till late in the night and you will end up waking up late and feeling lazy. Moreover, you ability to focus will also take a hit. Waking up early in the morning enhances your productivity and keeps you alert all through the day.
If you feel tired and sleepy, take a nap which is not longer than 20 minutes. Anything more will make you lethargic. Short naps do rejuvenate you.
5. Find Time to Introspect: We become so much involved in our daily life that we don’t find time for ourselves. Concentration reduces. Find time where in you are alone and can think about issues. This will help organize your thoughts and you can prioritize your tasks and duties. You will be able to make clear cut decisions and focus on the most important issues. You cluttered mind will be a lot more clear and you will know why you are doing activities when performing them.
All said and done, any technique that allows you to sit alone and think is good. Experiment and try out new methods to find out which one suits you the best. The crucial part is to implement them for longer periods. Follow the above 5 and you will greatly enhance your mental abilities and ability to reproduce what you have imbibed.
